Political musos in Melbourne this weekend -
December 13
Saturday December 13: Doors open 8.30
Northcote Social Club
301 High St, Northcote.
David Rovics is based in Portland, Oregon, and has been called the
musical voice of the progressive movement in the US. Since the mid-90's
he has spent most of his time on the road, playing hundreds of shows
every year throughout the world. He has shared the stage with musicians
like Billy Bragg and the Indigo Girls. More importantly, he's really
good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, and he will make
the revolution irresistible.
Alistair Hulett was born in Glasgow and moved to Australia at the age
of eighteen where his band Roaring Jack played its punk/rockabilly take
on Celtic folk, from the mid '80s until the early '90s. They played
with acts like Billy Bragg and The Pogues. He eventually returned to
the UK and most recently he joined with several Yorkshire based
musicians to form a semi-electric band called The Malkies.
David and Alistair are touring the east coast this December and
January.

North-South Pipeline community action -
December 14
This short-sighted project will pump 75 billion litres of water a year
from the Goulburn River, the major Victorian tributary of the Murray,
to supply Melbourne. The media to date has shown protests and rallies
by rural communities whose land and livelihoods are being damaged. But
the government says the pipeline is being built to benefit us in
Melbourne. We must ask ourselves:
* Do we really need it?
* What are its impacts?
* What else can we do to meet our water needs?
Please join us for a peaceful Walk On to the pipeline construction site
to show that Melbourne people care.
It is this Sunday December 14 (meeting at 11am in the Toolangi state
forest, about a 70 minute drive from inner Melbourne). Followed by a
picnic by the Yea River at Glenburn.
This is a family friendly event (there will be no work on site that
day). It will be a chance to see what’s happening with the pipeline and
hear directly from locals who have been affected.
Please consider joining us.

Audit shows Brumby government needs to get
cracking
Working with the other key state level green groups, we have done our
second annual assessment of the current government. We have found that
almost 40 per cent of the Victorian Government’s 2006 election promises
on the environment have been broken or are at risk of not being
delivered by 2010.
One of the highlights of the past year has been the creation the
Cobboboonee National Park, in western Victoria.
The assessment covers urban sustainability, water, energy and
biodiversity issues. It is available at:

A new Safe Sunscreen Guide will be released
next week by the Nanotechnology Project.
Contents will include research into which brands
are safest… read more at http://nano.foe.org.au/ or drop into Smith
