Stony Creek blockade continues

The blockade to protect Stony Creek old growth forest remains in place this morning, with three conservationists still occupying a tree platform thirty metres high in the forest canopy, despite Police Search and Rescue efforts to remove them yesterday.

At the 2006 state election the ALP promised protection of 41,000 ha of old growth forest in East Gippsland.

“The Brumby government has had more than two years to protect old growth forests in East Gippsland, and we are calling on Government to act immediately to protect these areas, “ said spokesperson Lauren Caulfield.

The forest protest at Stony Creek continues into its second week. Two women were removed from a roadblock and arrested late yesterday.

“Stony Creek is a vital link between existing national parks. Its protection is in line with Government promises to create a continuous link from the Snowy to the Errinundra National Parks.”

“Whether it’s the North South Pipeline, dredging the bay or the continued logging of our ancient forests, Premier Brumby continues to thumb his nose at the Victorian public,” said Jill Redwood.

“The Premier is failing to respond to both scientific evidence and public opinion. He must act now to protect East Gippsland’s old growth forests.”
