Take Action before October 8th!

Murray River Red Gum Wetlands urgently need your help...

Until 8th October 2007, you can participate in an historic and exciting process that could create Victoria's first Indigenous Jointly Managed National Parks, and protect over 100,000 hectares of Murray River Red Gum Wetlands.

Click here to take a stand NOW! for Indigenous rights to Country, for the River Murray and for the 400 threatened and near-threatened species that depend on its floodplains!

At the last election, the Victorian Government promised to protect Murray River Red Gum Wetlands in the state's first Indigenous Jointly Managed National Parks... but only if the Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) recommend they do so.

VEAC’s draft proposals paper has recently been released with some excellent recommendations for new National Parks and the creation of Indigenous Joint Management legislation.

But VEAC's draft proposals are under threat! Opponents from logging and grazing interest groups are lobbying hard against VEAC’s sustainable proposals. They’re generating fear in regional areas through an expensive and misleading advertising propaganda campaign.

VEAC have hit back with the facts (external link - pdf 29kb), but Victorian Premier John Brumby has already capitulated to logging and grazing lobbyists. On 26th September, he said he would "emphatically reject” a key VEAC draft recommendation to provide enough environmental water to allow the red gum wetlands to survive.

Together, let’s stand up for Indigenous rights to Country, for the River Murray and for the 400 threatened and near-threatened species that depend on its floodplains.

With our easy online form you can tell VEAC and Premier Brumby that you support protection of River Murray wetlands, through environmental watering and Indigenous Jointly Managed National Parks. This will be an official submission, which VEAC and the Premier are bound by law to take into account. Your words will make a difference.

Thank you for participating in this campaign. Please pass the word on through your networks. Every action, every submission makes a difference.
