2010 – the big election Year

Both the state and federal governments go to the polls late in 2010. We are well underway with our planning to ensure there is a good outcome for the environment and the community from both of these elections. FoE values collaboration, and is working with a range of partners on a number of fronts.


More herbicides detected in Barwon Water supply network

Friends of the Earth today expressed alarm at more detections of herbicides in the Barwon Water  Drinking Water Supply network.

Seventeen incidents of pollution occurred within the timeframe all consisting of the phenoxy herbicides 2,4-D, MCPA and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid. All of these herbicides are used in regards to killing broadleaved weeds on farms in grazing and cropping situations.

Officeworks store targeted as forest protection groups call for Reflex paper to be taken off the shelves

Forest protection groups have occupied the roof and storefront of a major Officeworks building in Collingwood this morning. Banners were unfurled over the rooftop billboards, targeting the Reflex Paper brand for its ongoing logging of Victoria’s native forests.


Gippsland Lakes Fishermen – To Hang Up Their Nets?

In what is an historic event, Gippsland Lakes professional fishermen have been forced from the water, and it appears that they will not return. The Gippsland Lakes were worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year to the Victorian Economy and support both recreational and professional fishermen.


Climate Change Bill tabled in Parliament

The Climate Change Bill 2010 was introduced to Parliament on 27 July 2010.

The main objective of the Bill is to create a new framework to help Victoria respond to the challenges of climate change and establish a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent compared with 2000 levels by 2020.


Launch of the Nuclear Freeways campaign

This Friday July 30th marks the launch of Friends of the Earths Nuclear Freeways campaign.

A delegation of Friends of the Earth members and Batman electorate residents will travel over 3,000ks on one of the proposed routes for the transport for Australia's radioactive waste.
